What advantages does the Ford Edge offer over the Hyundai Santa Fe?

The Ford Edge has a lower starting MSRP, but the real difference lies in the higher trim levels. The Hyundai Santa Fe has an $8,000 difference between its base model and the next trim. That's almost as big a difference as the price between the Ford Edge base model and its highest trim level.

The Ford Edge comes standard with more torque than the Hyundai Santa Fe, and it also provides a choice between engines while the Santa Fe does not. The available 2.7-liter V6 engine in the Ford Edge gives Redford speedsters 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. These specs beat the Hyundai Santa Fe's 290 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. On top of that power, the Ford Edge has a lower curb weight, which gives you a sportier feel as you accelerate.

It can be tough to balance power and efficiency, but the Ford Edge manages better specs in both areas. It gets up to 24 mpg combined, which bests the peak of 21 mpg combined of the Hyundai Santa Fe. Farmington drivers commuting to Detroit will enjoy 29 mpg highway in the Ford Edge, which saves money over the Hyundai Santa Fe's 25 mpg highway.

The Ford Edge can achieve these numbers because of advanced engine technology like Auto Start-Stop, which shuts off the engine while idling and starts up instantaneously when you take your foot off the brake. It isn't the only area you'll find incredibly smart features.

Livonia families are sure to enjoy the Ford Edge because of all the smart safety features that you'll find. Starting at the front of the car, there is a 180-degree camera in the front grille that allows you to see around corners without pulling out into the street. The Hyundai Santa Fe doesn't use this technology.

The Ford Edge is also one of the few cars to come available with inflatable safety belts for the rear outboard seats. These added airbags do even more to protect passengers in the event of a crash. Again, these advanced features are not available in the Hyundai Santa Fe.

Both cars are available with sensors for systems like blind spot monitor and lane change assist. However, more trim levels of the Ford Edge can be outfitted with lane departure warning and high beam assist. You'll have to upgrade to much more expensive trims of the Hyundai Santa Fe to find these features.

Convenience features have changed rapidly over the years, as now it seems that every car has one or more screens to help drivers with everything from music to tire pressure. Both models in this comparison have something to that effect, but the Ford Edge goes above and beyond. There's interior ambient lighting to match your mood, rain sensing wipers for one less thing for you to worry about, and more that you won't find in the Hyundai Santa Fe.
