Ford Motor Company is marking International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month by honoring women’s contributions to the modern automobile by literally taking those contributions out. They have released a cheeky video titled “The Ford Explorer Men’s Only Edition,” which showcases a modified vehicle without several essential features developed by women, including heaters, windshield wipers, turn signals, brake lights, and GPS.
Pioneering Women of the Automotive Industry

Florence Lawrence
Known as the “First Movie Star,” in 1913, Florence invented the first turn and brake signals for cars, and her invention improved road safety and paved the way for modern car signaling systems.
Dorothy Levitt
Dorthy was a British racing driver in the early 1900s who invented the first rearview mirror. Her invention revolutionized driving by improving visibility and reducing accidents.
Dorothée Pullinger
Dorothée was a Scottish automotive engineer who designed and built cars for women in the early 20th century. In 1923, she founded Galloway Motors, a company that employed mainly women and produced cars specifically designed for women. The cars had features such as smaller steering wheels and pedals, as well as an easier-to-operate gearbox.
Gladys West
Gladys was a mathematician and computer programmer who worked for the US Navy. She developed the mathematics behind GPS, which is widely used in navigation and location-based services today. Her contributions to GPS technology paved the way for many advancements in the automotive industry, such as autonomous driving.
