Why Ford is Investing in Renewable Energy
Ford has been a leader in automotive ingenuity throughout its history, and it continues to pave the way forward with a focus on renewable energy. The automaker actively strives to make the world a better place, and this has spurred Ford’s carbon neutrality pledge. Specifically, by 2050, Ford will be carbon neutral across the supply chain, operations, and vehicles. This will be accomplished by reducing emissions and the models’ carbon footprint.
In 2022, Ford made headlines by signing an agreement with DTE Energy in Michigan. This agreement was the largest corporate renewable energy purchase in the United States to date. This was followed in 2023 with a major accomplishment. During this year, Ford’s global operations used 50% renewable energy and 70% carbon-free electricity.
Ford plans to meet specific milestones to achieve its carbon neutrality goals. For example, every Ford vehicle manufactured in Detroit by 2026 will be made with the equivalent of 100% carbon-free energy. Ford is also working with suppliers to adopt similar standards through the Manufacture 2030 partnership. In addition, Ford is a founding member of the First Movers Coalition. This coalition’s primary objective is to obtain at least 10% of its aluminum and steel through near-zero carbon emissions by 2030. In addition, the Transform: Auto program intends to promote renewable energy adoption across the industry’s supply chain.
