2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Frunk Features & Design

Welcome to the future of trucking! The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning has taken the automotive industry by storm. This groundbreaking electric vehicle has ushered in a new era of pickups, offering drivers unparalleled performance, efficiency, and innovation. And now, with the introduction of the Mega power Frunk, the F-150 Lightning is raising the bar yet again. So, what exactly is the Frunk? In short, it’s a front trunk. But this isn’t just any old storage space. The Frunk is a game-changing feature that was designed with real customer advice in mind.

Ford listened to its customers and heard that they wanted a secure, weather-resistant space to store their gear, tools, and equipment. They also wanted a place to store and charge their electric tools without running an extension cord to the back of the truck. And that’s where the Frunk comes in. The Frunk is located in the front of the truck, where the engine would traditionally be located in a gas-powered vehicle. It offers 14.1 cubic feet of storage space, which is enough to fit three carry-on suitcases and two full-size golf clubs. It also features a drain plug, so you can fill it with ice and use it as a cooler for drinks or food.

The most impressive aspect of the Frunk is its functionality. It’s not just a storage space – it’s a power source. The Frunk features two 120-volt outlets and a USB port to charge your electric tools and devices on the go. Plus, it’s lockable so that you can store your valuable items with peace of mind.

The Frunk is a testament to Ford’s commitment to innovation and customer satisfaction. By listening to its customer’s needs and wants, Ford created a feature that sets the F-150 Lightning apart from any other pickup on the market. The Frunk is just one example of how Ford is leading the charge into the future of electric vehicles, and we can’t wait to see what other innovations they have in store.

Why the F-150 Lightning is Perfect for Your Next Camping Trip

How Ford’s Design Team Created the F-150 Lightning Frunk

Greg Ardisana, Design Strategy Director of the F-150 Lightning Frunk:  This is a low-fidelity prototype for the Frunk. So what we do is we use some cheap and easy materials like cardboard and hot glue to create a product that we can bring to customers quickly. The whole goal of it is to demonstrate an experience that somebody doesn’t have today and attempt to make something. And in this case, we don’t have an engine anymore. So we have a huge opportunity to add a nice space in. So what’s great about this is when we brought this to customers, they told us both work stories and play stories. We’ve heard stories from things like golf clubs to power tools. Some guys even talked about using it for fish. So it is quite a range of products. So the most useful insight we got is that this was a new space. Truck owners did not have this before.

Steve Mclnally, Frunk Feature Supervisor: You can put two full-sized golf clubs in here, and being able to put all of your stuff in here when you have a full crew inside the cab takes the whole vehicle to another level. The Mega Power Frunk has lots of highlights. We’ve got the 400 liters of volume, the 400 pounds of payload. You’ve got four outlets, and two USBs for all kinds of devices, including iPhones, saws, you name it. We’re going to be able to support it with that power outlet. There’s a drain plug for a cooler if you want to put some ice and water in there. No issue.

One of the main features for accessibility is the waterfall on the hood. If we had eliminated that, it would have been a traditional hood like our current F-150. Nobody would have been able to reach the bottom, and it would have been a no-go if you were a smaller size.

Greg Ardisana: So we collaborated closely with design and engineering because we were using low-fidelity prototypes to identify the decisions that had to be made, and we were able to quickly iterate and get those into the field of product customers. We talk to customers using low-fidelity prototypes all the time now, and you should start seeing that impact in many of our future products.
