What is Vehicle-to-Vehicle Charging?Â
Ford vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) charging is a technology that allows Ford Electric Vehicles, such as the F-150 Lightning and Mach-E, to share energy between each EV. Pro Power Onboard allows one EV to transfer power to the other vehicle’s battery, enabling charging away from charging stations. This is done by parking the two cars close to each other. The F-150 Lightning transfers energy to the other vehicle via its onboard charging system. V2V charging provides a convenient and efficient solution for drivers who need to keep both cars charged and ready to go.
How Much Range Can Vehicle-to-Vehicle Charging Provide?Â
Not only can customers use their F-150 Lightning or PowerBoost Hybrid to charge electric vehicles from Ford, but they can also charge EVs from other manufacturers. On average, a Mustang Mach-E SUV with extended range battery and rear-wheel drive can receive an additional 20 miles of range per hour of charging, while the F-150 Lightning can gain 13 miles of charge per hour.
How to Use the F-150 Lightning’s Pro Power Onboard to Charge Another EV
To use the Ford F-150 Lightning Pro Power Onboard to charge another electric vehicle (EV):
- Park the two vehicles close to each other.
- Connect the two vehicles using a compatible charging cable.
- Activate the Pro Power Onboard feature on the F-150 Lightning by pressing the appropriate button or using the vehicle’s infotainment system.
- Set the desired charging level on the F-150 Lightning.
- Monitor the charging progress using the vehicle’s infotainment system or the charging cable.
Once the desired charging level is reached, the charging will stop automatically, and the cable can be disconnected. It’s important to note that both vehicles must be compatible with V2V charging and have the necessary equipment and software to engage in this type of charging.
